Mehlville School District awarded for providing students with dual enrollment opportunities

St. Louis Community College awarded Mehlville School District for being the school district with the most students taking dual enrollment courses through STLCC. Currently, 169 Mehlville High School and Oakville High School students are enrolled in dual enrollment courses.
Those students have earned a combined 1,723 credit hours this school year. It’s estimated that Mehlville School District students have saved more than $598,000 in future college tuition costs during the 2023-2024 school year by taking dual enrollment courses at STLCC. Dual enrollment students pay $72.50 per credit hour as high school students, as opposed to the $122 per credit hour they would pay following high school graduation.
"We are continuing to expand dual enrollment, dual credit and advanced placement opportunities for our students as an important component of our strategic plan,” said Dr. John Dewalle, director of college and career readiness. “We are equally committed to providing access and opportunity to industry pathways that lead to high-demand careers. Through various programs and partnerships, our students have the ability to test-drive careers in professional settings, earn industry credentials in specific areas of concentration, and complete apprenticeship prerequisites to accelerate the path to employment."
There are several different opportunities for Mehlville School District students to earn college credit through STLCC. Students can choose to begin taking courses full-time at STLCC during their junior year through the Early College Academy. In this program, students can still participate in high school sports and activities while taking classes at STLCC that satisfy the state requirements for a high school diploma. Early College Academy students can graduate high school with both a high school diploma and an associate degree. They’re able to take general education courses at a much lower cost than they would encounter at a four-year college or university.
"The Early College Academy is a great opportunity for students who want to get their credits and get prepared for college before other students,” said Melina Dizdarevic, a senior at Mehlville High School.
MHS and OHS students who have completed all of their high school course requirements can also enroll in the Make it Count program during the second semester of their senior year. This program allows students to take a full schedule of college classes at STLCC.
“Make it Count has been a great experience and has prepared me for college by teaching me how to rely on myself to get my work done,” said Travis Norris, a senior at Oakville High School.
Additionally, students enrolled in Mehlville High School’s culinary course can receive dual credit through St. Louis Community College.
Mehlville School District also received an award for being the district with the most students enrolled in career and industry tracks through STLCC. That enrollment comes through the Access Point program. Access Point is an accelerated Information Technology (IT) program that offers students the opportunity to receive college credit leading to a paid apprenticeship after graduation. This program develops each student’s existing coding experience to the level of a junior software engineer level. Like Make it Count, Access Point is offered to students during the second semester of their senior year.
