Bus Drivers
We have several openings in our Transportation Department for school bus drivers, activity bus drivers and a utility driver/maintenance technician.
“It’s great because you get to meet the kids and their parents,” said Jim Wiemann, school bus driver. “They’ll still come up to you after the graduate wanting to talk, and it’s a good feeling that you’ve done something to make a connection with kids.”
In addition to being a great position for those that have retired, many of our school bus drivers are also parents of students in the district.
“I encourage moms and dads who have kids that are school-aged to apply,” said Tracie Zera, school bus driver. “It’s a great job with great benefits, and you’re home when your children are home.”
Once hired, the Transportation Department will assist in obtaining the necessary training and certifications.
Our school bus drivers have gone above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic by driving students back-and-forth to school for intervention time with their teachers and delivering meals to students who are learning virtually.
School Food and Nutrition Services technician
Mehlville School District also has several openings for School Food and Nutrition Services technicians. These employees are tasked with preparing meals for students.
“When the students come through the line, they get so excited to see you,” said Michelle Kovacich, cafeteria manager at Blades Elementary.
Like our current openings for bus drivers, the SFNS technician position is great for parents.
“I have five kids, including three who attend school in Mehlville School District,” said Ana Ford, cafeteria manager at Bierbaum Elementary. “I’m off when my kids are off, so it works really well with a parent’s schedule.”
There are both part- and full-time positions in the SFNS department. The department hires cafeteria managers from within, so there are opportunities for career advancement.
SFNS employees have also stepped up throughout the pandemic to make sure students are fed, whether they’re learning virtually or in-person. They’ve been serving curbside Grab-and-Go meals at no cost and teaming with Operation Food Search to provide free produce boxes and meal kits to families. Additionally, they’ve revamped their safety procedures to make sure students are safe when eating at school.
Substitute Teachers
Substitute teachers are one of the unsung heroes of this school year. They have filled in throughout the year to make sure students can continue to receive the best education possible.
School districts across the country were facing a substitute teacher shortage before the pandemic, and the situation has only gotten worse. Classroom teachers who are already working harder than ever have been ready and willing to fill in when needed, but adding more substitute teachers is a necessity.

We recently hired 20 new substitute teachers, and adding even more is important to help keep classrooms and schools up-and-running if teachers are asked to stay off-campus due to a potential COVID-19 exposure.
Floating Custodians
Mehlville School District also has openings for floating custodians. These employees work at a base school, but fill-in on other campuses as needed.
“My favorite thing about my job is the people,” said Kelly Myles, custodian at Mehlville High School. “When you get to a school, it’s like a big family once you get to know the teachers and the principal.”
Like the SFNS department, the Facilities also offers opportunities for employees to advance their career.
“I spent four years working as a night custodian, two years as a head custodian and two in my current role,” said Randy Drake, custodian.
Drake currently helps ensure custodians across the district have all of the supplies they need to provide a safe learning environment for students and staff. “
“I’ve worked other places where I was told I’d have the opportunity to advance but never did,” Drake said. “It’s been proven that if you work hard here, you’ll get the opportunity.”
