The week of October 7-11, 2024, schools throughout Mehlville School District will be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items. The efforts are part of Fill Up the Pickup, a grassroots food collection that started in Oakville during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At its annual Tax Rate Hearing on September 26, 2024, the Mehlville Board of Education approved the 2024 tax rates. The 2024 blended tax rate will be $4.0070

As outlined in the Mehlville School District Portrait of a Graduate, the district’s goal is for alumni to possess a wide range of values and skills to help them lead successful professional and personal lives by being creative and critical thinkers, self aware, persistent, communicators, and ethical and global citizens. We spoke to 10 recent alumni about their career accomplishments and how their experience in the Mehlville School District prepared them for life after graduation.

Mehlville School District students had safer school entrances and more comfortable classrooms at the start of the 2024-2025 school year due to summer construction. Several schools received new security entrances, while others received HVAC upgrades and roof replacements.

A Middle School Schedule Steering Committee was formed last school year to research and provide feedback in the development of a new middle school schedule that is anchored in the values of student achievement, providing a structure that allows for increased instructional time, advanced pathways and expanded options, and personalization for students. The committee is seeking your feedback on a potential schedule change.

As we close out another remarkable school year and gear up for the next, on behalf of the Board of Education, I want to take a moment to reflect on our collective achievements and express gratitude.

Mehlville School District is using Infinite Campus for our Parent Portal and Student Information System starting with the 2024-2025 school year. The Parent Portal allows parents and guardians to see their child’s grades, attendance and other educational records. The Parent Portal also allows parents to enroll new students and complete the annual Family Information Update.

Tom Harper, an English language arts teacher at Mehlville High School, was named a Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year. He is one of just ten educators in the St. Louis area to receive this honor.

The Mehlville School District Board of Education unanimously approved the budget for the 2024-2025 school year (fiscal year 2025) at its June 6 meeting. The operating budget for fiscal year 2025 is break-even.

The Mehlville Board of Education approved the hiring of Jessica Hoban as an assistant principal at Oakville High School for the 2024-2025 school year.

We're hosting open job interviews to fill openings for school bus drivers, school bus monitors, substitute nurses, substitute health room assistants and substitute teachers for the 2024-2025 school year.

Mehlville High School and Oakville High School held their 2024 graduation ceremonies on Sunday, June 2, at Chaifetz Arena. Congratulations to the more than 700 students who received their diploma!

The Wohlwend Elementary School Marketplace was open for business in May! First-grade students learned about economics by creating goods and selling them to kindergarten student shoppers. Through the cross-curricular project, students learned about goods, services, producers and consumers. They also displayed their knowledge of addition strategies and soft skills learned throughout the school year.

To date, Mehlville School District has earned $864,630 in its participation in BizSavers. Ameren estimates the district has an annual energy cost savings of $495,098 from upgrades it has made to lighting, HVAC and commercial kitchen equipment.

The Mehlville Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. Samantha Gatzemeyer as assistant principal at Blades Elementary School and Hagemann Elementary School for the 2024-2025 school year.

A one-of-a-kind experience is allowing some Mehlville School District students to learn cross-curricular concepts from the depths of Cliff Cave.

St. Louis Community College awarded Mehlville School District for being the school district with the most students taking dual enrollment courses through STLCC. Currently, 169 Mehlville High School and Oakville High School students are enrolled in dual enrollment courses.

Students in Brian Adams’ art class at Oakville Elementary School have been leading art lessons for their classmates after mastering skills. The experience is beneficial for both students leading and participating in the lessons.

The Mehlville School District kindergarten science curriculum focuses on life sciences of plants and animals. Students at Beasley Elementary School learned about the life cycle through observations of chickens.

We're hosting a Spring Job Fair to fill openings for school bus drivers and substitute teachers. Join us from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 9, at Mehlville School District Central Office (3120 Lemay Ferry Road).

Washington Middle School students collaborated with a group to construct a dam, simulating the creation of ecosystems.

The Mehlville Board of Education unanimously approved hiring Jennifer Rich as the principal of Point Elementary School for the 2024-2025 school year at its meeting on April 11, 2024.

Online registration is open for kindergarten students and new students in grades 1-12 who will be attending a Mehlville School District school for the 2024-2025 school year.

During the April 2 Board of Education election, Patrick McKelvey and Tori Behlke were re-elected to three-year terms, and Peggy Hassler and Jean Pretto were re-elected to two-year terms, according to unofficial election results from St. Louis County Election Board.

Ten Mehlville School District citizens have filed their candidacy for four positions on the Mehlville Board of Education. The following information was provided by the candidates. District staff do not edit their responses. These Board of Education candidates are on the April 2, 2024, ballot.

The Mehlville Board of Education has unanimously approved several bids to replace aging HVAC equipment. As a result of the increase in assessed values of Mehlville School District properties, the board has approved almost $8 million in bids for HVAC work in the summer of 2024 alone.

Mehlville High School seniors Sam Herbig, Tyler Langford and Luke Mitchell have shared a love of music since middle school. They’re now exploring how to turn that passion into a career in music education by using the MyPath program to mentor middle school students.

The Mehlville Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of two assistant principals for the 2024-2025 school year: Sarah Gray at Mehlville High School and Emilee Madlinger at Oakville High School.

Tony Brown, the band director at Mehlville High School, is the 2024 recipient of the Missouri Music Educators Association’s Dr. Wynne Harrell Outstanding Music Educator Award. The MMEA presents this award to one music educator each year who exemplifies the profession’s highest standards of teaching, learning and professionalism.

You can see the craftsmanship of design lab students throughout the Bernard Middle School campus. Students in this class are improving their school by identifying needs and solving problems through industrial design.

Kaitlin Haarmann, a reading interventionist at Bierbaum Elementary School, received the Exceptional Educator Award from the Affton-Lemay Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes teachers from schools in the 63125 ZIP code for professional excellence in the classroom and their dedication to students.

Ten Mehlville School District citizens have filed their candidacy for four positions on the Mehlville Board of Education. An election will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

Cynthia Biggs, the reading specialist at Point Elementary School, started the reading buddies program 15 years ago to provide students with extra support in reading. The program has continued to grow, proving beneficial for younger and older students, as well as their teachers.

In the 2023-2024 school year, Mehlville School District can use up to five virtual learning days if our schools close due to snow or inclement weather. If more than five weather closures occur, we will use traditional snow days. Traditional snow days will be made up starting on May 30, 2024.

The Missouri State Board of Education has approved a three-year innovation waiver for 20 public school districts, including Mehlville School District, that will support the creation of a more meaningful way to measure student learning, demonstrate individual student growth and influence future success for all Missouri students.

During its annual Tax Rate Hearing on Sept. 21, 2023, the Mehlville Board of Education unanimously approved the 2023 blended tax rate of $3.9680 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation.

Rodney Gerdes, a social studies teacher at Oakville High School, has been named one of ten honorees for Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year for the St. Louis region. This distinction means that Gerdes is eligible to submit an application for Missouri State Teacher of the Year.

The Mehlville Board of Education approved the Fiscal Year 2024 Budget (for the 23-24 school year) at their June 29, 2023 meeting. The budget provides competitive salaries for all employees and a plan to pay for critical and deferred maintenance.

Mehlville School District has a bright future, and there is so much still to achieve. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to serve the Mehlville School District.
