Ray Meier, a senior at Oakville High School, placed in the top ten of the computer-aided design category competing against students from across the world at Technology Student Association Nationals. Ray previously placed first in the same category at the state level.

Board of Education Governance Award
Mehlville Board of Education
The Mehlville Board of Education received the 2024 Governance Team Award from the Missouri School Boards' Association. The Mehlville Board received the award for their outstanding commitment to ongoing professional development in areas such as student achievement, school law and finance, board operations and contemporary issues in education.

The award also recognizes the board's commitment to regional and statewide leadership and to active participation in legislative advocacy for public schools and the students they serve.

Tom Harper, an English language arts teacher at Mehlville High School, was named a Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year. He is one of just ten educators in the St. Louis area to receive this honor. Learn more.

Midwest Twirling Regional Champions
Twirling regional champions

The Mehlville High School Majorettes and Oakville High School Tiger Twirlers competed in the Midwest Regional Twirling Competition. Each time won a category and placed as the runner-up in the other: 
  • Mehlville Majorettes: Regional Halftime Champions and second place in Regional Dance Twirl
  • Oakville Tiger Twirlers: Regional Dance Twirl Champions and second place in Regional Halftime
Both teams will compete at the National Baton Twirling Championships in July.

The Mehlville School District transportation department received a perfect score of 100 on an inspection of 104 buses by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Three Oakville High School student-athletes were named to the All-Conference boys tennis team: 
  • Josh Tiemann, a senior, was named to the All-Conference First Team in both singles and doubles. He also finished fourth in singles at the state tournament.
  • Kolton Kreisz, a junior, was named to the All-Conference First Team in doubles.
  • Sam Webb, a senior, received the Conference Sportsmanship Award.

Sara Brand, a junior at Oakville High School, was accepted into the Student Board of Directors program at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Students in the program gain an understanding of the Federal Reserve Bank's role in the United States economy and receive financial literacy education. Anna will also be able to network and be mentored by Federal Reserve employees.

Summer leadership opportunities
OHS Sophomore Leadership Students

Seven Oakville High School sophomores were selected to attend summer leadership opportunities this summer: 
  • Alyssa Boehlje, Scott Janson and Tanner Medina are attending the Missouri Scholars Academy at the University of Missouri. The program will allow them to enhance their academic skills by attending guest lectures, forums, culture events and other programs in areas that interest them.
  • Max Bradley, Ella Roth and Sydney Wideman are attending the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Missouri Seminar at Webster University. These students are participating in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences. 
  • Delaney Brawley was selected to attend the Missouri Leadership Seminar at the University of Central Missouri. Delaney was exposed to panels of professional speakers about pressing issues and empowered to change lives by making a positive difference in her community.

Buerkle Middle School Academy students participated in the Sheldon SOLID Project. The STEAM-based program challenges students to designed and create their own musical instruments by following the steps of the engineering cycle. The device created by eighth-grade students Hamza Dulic and Andrew Miller was among twelve chosen from schools across the St. Louis area to remain on display at The Sheldon.

Students recognized include OES fifth-grade students Elena Binns, Carter Bridgewater, Victoria Cuka, Evelyn Drabb, Samantha Newton, Hailey Palecek, Petey Mondello, Will Voss, Amina Putes, Margaret White, Avery Stone and Katie Wilson; and Bernard eighth-grade student Asher Pleimann. The Mehlville High School Student Council received the Honor Council Gold Award from the Missouri Association of Student Councils. This award honors student councils that have comprehensive programs to promote student leadership and activities, including school and community service, school spirit, teacher recognition and leadership training activities. Only 58 student councils across the state of Missouri received this award.

Lighthouse Award
Leah Black, a counselor at Oakville High School, received the Lighthouse Award from CHADS Coalition for Mental Health. Recipients of this award are nominated for being extraordinary advocates for mental health and suicide prevention efforts. Leah's nominator said: 

"Leah has been a light to so many students struggling with wide ranges of suicidal ideation, behavioral management, self-harm, family challenges, and self-esteem. Leah has worked to establish a consistent connection with the Family Support and SEW CHADS Employees at OHS, always advocating for the best care for her students. I am honored to work with Leah and believe she deserves all the recognition for the amazing work she does every day. She is such a light to the school community."

Nine Mehlville High School students earned the Seal of Biliteracy by building a social-cultural portfolio, attending and participating in cultural events and proving they can speak, read and write fluently in multiple languages. Three students scored at the highest levels of proficiency to earn a Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy.

St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards
OHS Musical Theatre Awards

The Oakville High School Theatre program received the Carol B. Loeb Technical Enhancement Award at the St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards. The program was selected from 44 schools and will receive a $5,000 grant to enhance technical elements of their productions and performance space.

The program's performance of "Seussical: The Musical" was also nominated for two awards: Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Costume Design and Execution.

Seal of Biliteracy - Oakville High School
OHS Seal of Biliteracy students

24 Oakville High School students earned the Seal of Biliteracy by building a social-cultural portfolio, attending and participating in cultural events and proving they can speak, read and write fluently in multiple languages. Five seniors went above and beyond by earning a Seal of Biliteracy in multiple languages or scoring at the highest levels of proficiency to earn a Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy. 
  • Dzejlana Hodzic earned the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy in Bosnian and a Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish.
  • Nelina Huskanovic earned the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy in Bosnian.
  • C.J. Ottenlips earned the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish.
  • Sham Qattan earned the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy in Arabic.
  • Jing Zhou earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and Mandarin.
Some colleges and universities will allow students who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy to have up to six credit hours allotted to them upon entry to college based on their competency and having the seal on their transcript.

Ethan Venable, a senior at Oakville High School received the Elite 11 Scholar Athlete Award from the St. Louis chapter of the National Football Foundation. This honor is given to student-athletes who are outstanding in football performance, academic achievement and school leadership.

OHS Boys Swimming Academic All-State Team

Ten Oakville High School students were named to the Academic All-State Swim Team: Seniors Ben Pantazo, Jake Pantazo, Aleks Ratkovic and Brayden Zimmerman; and juniors Nathan Baker, Bobby Cook, Ben Govero, Dom McEntee, Omar Musleh and Amar Nuhanovic. These students scored 25 or higher on the ACT, 1150 or higher on the SAT or ended the fall semester with a 3.6 GPA.

The Mehlville National Education Association named Han Au, a freshman at SCOPE, and Lucy Fister, a senior at Mehlville High School, as its Students of the Month. Han was recognized for her commitment to academic success, exemplary attendance, work ethic and character. Lucy was honored for excelling in the classroom, in numerous clubs and activities, and in sports.

Mehlville High School students competed in the HOSA - Future Health Professionals state competition. Several students placed, with two advancing to the international level of competition:

The Buerkle Middle School Student Council received the Honor Council Gold Award from the Missouri Association of Student Councils. This award honors student councils that have comprehensive programs to promote student leadership and activities, including school and community service, school spirit, teacher recognition and leadership training activities. Only 58 student councils across the state of Missouri received this award.

Three members of the Mehlville School District Board of Education achieved Distinguished Board Member Certification from the Missouri School Boards' Association: Peggy Hassler, Board President; Jean Pretto, Board Director; and Jeff Wolman, Board Director. To earn Distinguished Board Member Certification, board members must achieve both Advanced and Master certification, earn at least 62 training credits, complete annual training, read a book related to school board service, observe board meetings of two other school districts, attend at least two MSBA regional or statewide events, and demonstrate leadership, advocacy and presentation skills in a variety of activities related to school board service. Hassler, Pretto and Wolman join Patrick McKelvey, Board Secretary, who obtained Distinguished Board Member Certification earlier this school year.

Seven Mehlville High School freshmen competed in the St. Louis Region National History Day competition, with several advancing to the state level of competition.
  • A group documentary created by Samantha Allsworth, Lona Floyd, Tarik Mesic and Jesse Serra about the cultural influence of Bosnian immigrants on St. Louis won its division to advance to state.
  • Sophia Guerrero's individual exhibit about "Radium Girls" won its division to advance to state.
  • Zaide Rosso created an individual documentary about the impact of the printing press.
  • Anna Love entered an individual exhibit about the impact of Title IX on women's sports.

Jeff Kuchno, a retired Oakville High School journalism teacher, received a 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Journalism Education Association.  Kuchno served as OHS's broadcast, newspaper and journalism advisor for 15 years. During that time, his students won more than 75 individual national awards, five best of show honors, four pacemaker finalists and two pacemaker awards. Kuchno was previously honored with a JEA Special Recognition Broadcast Adviser Award in 2017.

SKILLED Award with their Global Business and Entrepreneurship classmates at STL CAPS. Through the Pirate Prosthetics project, their team engaged fifth-grade students at Bierbaum Elementary School to create a robotic cardboard hand incorporating all aspects of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math). The team received a $1,000 prize for winning the award.

Oakville High School students participated in the Missouri YMCA Youth and Government program in Jefferson City, a three-day, student-led simulation of the three branches of state government. Several students received awards for their work:
  • Bryce Kesselring, a senior, received Outstanding Bill Collaboration for his work in the Senate. His bill on legalizing sports betting passed through both chambers and was signed by the YAG governor.
  • Mason Bader and Sawyer Bess, both seniors, received the Media Dynamic Duo Award for their video work.
  • Travis Norris, a senior, was recognized as the Outstanding Statesperson for his work as a committee chair and dedication in the House.
  • Owen Mellinger, a junior, was elected as the Speaker of the House for next year's conference

She does everything in her power to make everybody's life around her so much easier, and she's so nice and kind to everybody. Not only is she a student worker but also a student ambassador, and she is always willing to come and help around the area."
  • Noor Moughal, a junior at Mehlville High School, was nominated by a teacher who said, "Noor is always working hard and eager to put all of her knowledge and skills into practice with guests in the student salon. Her professionalism, participation, and maturity make it so exciting to be her teacher. She makes teaching fun!"

Three Oakville High School students placed at the Gateway Arch Engineering Competition with their classmates from the St. Louis Centers for Advanced Professional Studies (STL CAPS). The teams were tasked with developing automated ramps and docks that do not require manual adjustments for the daily fluctuation of water levels.

Kevin Green, a PE teacher at Blades Elementary School, was selected as Mehlville School District’s Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award recipient for the 2023-2024 school year. This award is given to teachers in the St. Louis area who are examples of excellence in their field. Each school in Mehlville School District nominates one teacher, and then a district representative is selected. This honor qualifies Mr. Green to apply for additional grants.

Jing Zhou, a senior at Oakville High School, was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. This honor was received by only 16,000 high school seniors from across the country and qualifies Jing to advance to the next round of the competition.

World Twirling Competition

The Saint Louis Performance Academy received a silver medal at the World Twirling Competition in Liverpool, England where they competed against teams from around the world. 28 of the 33 team members are Mehlville School District students, including those on the Mehlville High School Majorettes and Oakville High School Tiger Twirlers. Miles King, a 2023 graduate of Mehlville High School, and Kyleigh McCourt, a senior at MHS, made it to the finals in Nations Cup Senior Duet and finished top ten in the world.

The Mehlville High School Majorettes are the 2023 National High School Dance Twirl Champions. The Majorettes also placed second in High School Halftime. Additionally, the Oakville High School Tiger Twirlers also finished on the podium, placing third in High School Dance Twirl and High School Halftime.

The Mehlville High School Majorettes and the Oakville High School Tiger Twirlers competed in the Regional Twirling Championships. The Majorettes placed first in Halftime, while the Tiger Twirlers finished first in Dance Twirl. Both teams now advance to nationals later this summer.

Oakville High School tennis doubles partners Danijel Blagojevic, a senior, and Josh Tiemann, a junior, won the Class 3 District 1 Championship to cap an undefeated run of 15-0 through that point in the season. Additionally, the pair was named to the All-Conference First Team in doubles, with Tiemann also earning All-Conference First Team honors in singles and Blagojevic named All-Conference Second Team in singles.

MHS Seal of Biliteracy students

Estephanie Fabian and Chau Pham, seniors at Mehlville High School, earned the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This honor is given to students who score at the highest level of proficiency in English and at least one other language before high school graduation. Fabian earned her Seal in Spanish, while Pham earned hers in Vietnamese. 

17 other Mehlville High School students also earned the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy by building a social-cultural portfolio, attending and participating in cultural events and proving they can speak, read and write fluently in multiple languages. Some colleges and universities will allow Hodzic and these students to have up to six credit hours allotted to them upon entry to college based on their competency and having the seal on their transcript.

This honor is given to a student-athlete from each school in our area who excels in competition and in the classroom by lettering in at least one varsity sport and being in the top 25 percent of their graduating class.

Seal of Biliteracy - Oakville High School
OHS Seal of Biliteracy students

Dzejlana Hodzic, a junior at Oakville High School, earned the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This honor is given to students who score at the highest level of proficiency in English and at least one other language before high school graduation. Hodzic earned the seal in Bosnian.

21 other Oakville High School students also earned the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy by building a social-cultural portfolio, attending and participating in cultural events and proving they can speak, read and write fluently in multiple languages. Some colleges and universities will allow Hodzic and these students to have up to six credit hours allotted to them upon entry to college based on their competency and having the seal on their transcript.

Oakville High School journalism students were recognized with Best of Show, All-Missouri and Superior ratings by the Missouri Interscholastic Journalism Association at the University of Missouri’s J-Day.  

- Junior Sawyer Bess was one of ten students from across the state selected for the MIJA All-State Team. This honor is given to students who have proven themselves to be indispensable to their school media teams. 
- Seniors Layla Halilbasic and Belma Mujakic were named members of the MIJA Honor Roll. Students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and at least two years of producing high-quality work as a member of student media.
- Mujakic also led three sessions during the conference focusing on editorial leadership and utilizing social media.
- Halilbasic, Mujakic and senior Hailey Veninga received Best of Show for Yearbook Overall Theme/Concept. 
- Mujakic, Veninga, seniors Skyler Brennan and Tony Schupp, and juniors Elise Norton and Emma Neuhoff received Best of Show of Yearbook Portrait/People Package.

Mehlville High School Media journalism students were recognized with superior and all-Missouri ratings by the Missouri Interscholastic Journalism Association at the University of Missouri’s J-Day.  

- Seniors Senita Galijasevic and Ajla Husi; junior Izzy Wilder; and sophomore Denis Linhorst received All Missouri for their online sports package “Alumni Creates Futsal League.” 
- The Mehlville Today broadcast received a rating of superior in the newsmagazine category for broadcasting. The program is produced by seniors Jada Banks, Emma Esmerovic, Livi Roberts, Nela Suljic, Cameron Ulmer, Madison Ulrich and Emily Worthmore.
- Senior Jordan Muschamp earned a superior rating for social media in both the TikTok and Instagram categories.
- Seniors Caleb Gardner, Adna Pekmez and Vanessa Vaughn received superior for their spotlight feature package “Worthmore Reveals Career Path and Struggles.” 
- Seniors Jada Banks, Merisa Celebic, Senita Galijasevic, Lejla Mujkic, Adna Pekmez, Aldijana Selimovic, Farzana Sharifi, Nela Suljic, Cameron Ulmer and Emily Worthmore were named to the Missouri Journalism Honor Roll for having a GPA of 3.5 of higher and producing high-quality work in student media for two years.

Mehlville School District Board President Peggy Hassler, Secretary Patrick McKelvey and Director Jeff Wolman achieved both Master and Advanced Certification in the Missouri School Boards’ Association (MSBA) Certified Board Member program. All elected school board members are required by state law to complete an 18.5-hour training program. To obtain both Master and Advanced Certification, board members must earn an additional 24 training credits, complete annual refresher training, read four books related to school board service, attend at least four MSBA regional or statewide events and write two essays relating their study to their board service.

Mehlville High School HOSA - Future Health Professionals students placed at the HOSA State Leadership Conference and are advancing to the international level of competition.
  • Seniors Merisa Celebic, Paula Dang, Lejla Mujkic and Aldijana Selimovic placed first in Health Education.
  • Senior Klevis Dajko placed first on the Nutrition Exam and second on the Health Care Issues Exam.
  • Seniors Lisa Hang and Rachel Trosky, and juniors Lydia Clark, Lucy Fister, Amy Escamilla, Bri Hong and Nerma Hrsic placed second in Parliamentary Procedure.
  • Senior Rachel Trosky placed fourth on the Leadership Exam.
  • Sophomore Morgan Ulrich placed fourth in Sports Medicine.
  • Junior Lucy Fister was elected to the Missouri State Officer Team as Vice President, beating out 14 other candidates for the role.
  • Senior Lisa Hang will continue to serve on the Missouri State Officer Team as the Post Secondary Vice President.

Mehlville High School junior Kyleigh McCourt was one of fourteen finalists from across the St. Louis region to compete in the 13th Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Saturday, April 8. McCourt, who is a member of the national champion Mehlville Majorettes, did baton twirling as her talent.

Mehlville High School student-athletes received Academic All-State honors from the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. Students honored include seniors Michael Jones and Evan McClusky; juniors Amy Escamilla and Chris Pesselato; and sophomores Kayla Barrett, Allison Miller, Natalie O'Brien, Dominic Ramos and Lindsey Roberts. All-Academic requirements including being nominated by their head coach, competing in a district- or state-level meet and having either a 25 or higher on the ACT, a 1150 or higher on the SAT or a 3.6 cumulative grade point average.

Mehlville High School senior Lisa Hang was selected for the Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of the state's top academic students in each graduating class. Selection is based on a formula using the student's grade point average and ACT/SAT scores, as well as their involvement in school. Mehlville High School senior Ian Furgeson and Oakville High School seniors Rachel Granda and Jessica Schmidt were named Missouri Scholars 100 Honorable Mention.

The Mehlville School District transportation department received a perfect score of 100 on an inspection of 104 buses by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. They also received a perfect score on a surprise inspection of 30 buses in the fall.
