Kindergarten Preparation

Dear Incoming Kindergarten Families,

Welcome to the Mehlville School District! We are excited you have joined our community. Mehlville has a dedicated team of Kindergarten educators that are looking forward to working closely with you and your child in the Fall.

We know that young children can learn language, math, and other skills through play and everyday experiences. We have put together some activities you can choose to do with your child throughout the summer months. We compiled the activities in six different choice boards: reading, writing, letters and sounds, math, fine and gross motor, and social/emotional. You and your child can choose any of the activities from any of the choice boards each day and may even choose to do more than one a day. These activities support play and learning at the same time, can be done with little to no materials, and will support your child in promoting kindergarten readiness skills.

Above all else, reading aloud to your child is the number one thing you can do to prepare them for Kindergarten. By hearing stories, your child will hear and learn language that they will later be able to read themselves, write, and use when speaking. We have put together a recommended summer reading list for all grades and this list can be found on our district website. In addition to the titles we selected, you can read any book you have at home or any book you have access to through the library or online.

Should you have any questions about the Kindergarten curriculum and your upcoming year, you can reach out to your building principal or either of us. We would be happy to talk with you. Enjoy the summer months of fun and learning with your child.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brian Smith
