Prop R Information

On Monday, August 17th, the Mehlville School District Board of Education voted 5-1 in favor of putting Proposition R on the November ballot. The measure calls for a 49 cent increase to the current school district property tax rate. Board members Venki Palamand, Larry Felton, Samantha Stormer, Jean Pretto and Lisa Dorsey voted Yes. Board member Lori Trakas voted No. Board member Jamey Murphy did not attend the meeting.

The ballot language reads as follows:

Shall the Board of Education of the Mehlville R-9 School District be authorized to increase the operating tax levy of the District for the purposes of funding the Mehlville Strategic Plan in order to restore and improve funding for early interventions for struggling students; training and retaining quality teachers and staff; upgrading student and district technology; restoring, repairing, and upgrading HVAC systems, roofing, and district facilities; and fund ongoing operating expenses by $.49 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation? If this proposition is approved, the adjusted operating levy of the District is estimated to be $4.2275 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation.

If Prop R passes, the owner of a $150,000 home would pay an extra $11.64 per month in property taxes. Superintendent Dr. Chris Gaines gave a Prop R presentation to the board on Monday, August 17, and outlined a decade of budget cuts that helped create the district's current situation.
